November 22, 2004 - The Orioles readjusted their 40-man roster on Friday by adding prospects Eli Whiteside and Mike Fontenot to the roster and sent pitcher Ryan Hannaman to Triple-A Ottawa. Both Whiteside and Fontenot have had significant experience with the Baysox.
Whiteside, the Orioles’ sixth-round draft pick in 2001, spent parts of the last three seasons with the Baysox. The catcher spent all of 2004 in Bowie, where he hit .253 with 18 home runs and 60 RBIs in 90 games.
Whiteside further improved his stock with a strong showing in the Arizona Fall League, hitting .329 with four homers and 20 RBIs for the Peoria Javelinas. Whiteside is expected to begin next season in Triple-A, but has an outside chance at a backup catcher role with Baltimore.
Fontenot was added to the roster after a solid season for Ottawa, hitting .279 with eight homers and 49 RBIs in 136 games. Fontenot’s best professional season thus far came in 2003, when he was named the organization’s Player of the Year as well as Bowie's MVP. That season, the Orioles’ first-round draft pick in 2001 led all farmhands with a .325 average, adding 12 home runs and 66 RBIs.
