Harrisburg Prospect Preview

June 13, 2008 - The Baysox welcome the Harrisburg Senators to Bowie for a weekend series beginning Friday, June 13. The Senators are the Class AA affiliate for the Washington Nationals and several top Nats prospects will be in action. These are some of the players to watch and remember, since they could be in the big leagues before long.

Mike Daniel is one of just three healthy outfielders slated to play in this weekend's series for the Senators. Daniel is rated as the Nats' 23rd best prospect by Baseball America. Drafted out of the University of North Carolina, Daniel is a mature hitter who shows great patience at the plate. He has decent power, especially to right field (his pull side). His greatest asset is his versatility – he is fast enough to play all three outfield positions and also a good baserunner. Daniel projects as a potential number two hitter and a solid fourth outfielder in the majors.

Righty Jordan Zimmermann is rated as the number seven prospect in the Nats' system by Baseball America. He pitched well in college for Wisconsin-Stevens Point but slipped to the Nats in the second round in the 2007 draft. Zimmermann's best pitch is his mid-90's fastball that has good movement and he mixes in a nice curveball that has a lot of late break.

Just called up from Class A Potomac, Baseball America rates right handed pitcher Adam Carr as the fourteenth best prospect for the Nationals. Carr only pitched five innings in his college career at Oklahoma State, playing first base instead and collecting 34 homeruns. Nats scouts elected to draft him as a pitcher and took him in the 18th round of the 2006 draft. Carr was the closer for Class A Potomac in 2007, going 3-1 with an ERA of 1.81 and racking up ten saves. He struck out an impressive 65 batters in 49 innings of work. Carr gets it done with a nice fastball that can reach 97 miles per hour and mixes in a wicked low-80's slider that has good bite.

The number 8 prospect in the Nats' organization according to Baseball America, outfielder Justin Maxwell was selected in the fourth round of the 2005 draft out of Maryland. Maxwell struggled with injuries in college and is on the disabled list for this weekend's series. Maxwell played his first full professional season in 2007 between Hagerstown and Potomac in Class A, putting up impressive numbers. He finished the year as the only player in minor league baseball with 25 doubles, 25 homeruns, and 25 steals. The Nats called him up following the conclusion of the minor league season and Maxwell made a memorable debut, hitting a grand slam in his first major league game. Maxwell has great upside but needs to remain healthy and improve his patience at the plate.
