June 8, 2008 - The Baysox came into their weekend series in Harrisburg a half game back of the Senators for first place in the Southern Division. After completing a three game sweep of Harrisburg Sunday afternoon with a score of 5-4, Bowie emerged in first place, two and a half games clear of the field.
The Baysox struck first in the top of the second on a solo homerun off the bat of Nolan Reimold. Bowie extended their lead in the third inning after Kennard Jones led off with a walk. Jones stole second base then moved to third on a fielding error that allowed Mike Rodriguez to reach base. With two outs and runners on the corners, Lou Montanez drilled a double to left field, scoring both Jones and Rodriguez to put the Baysox ahead, 3-0.
The Senators answered right back in their next two turns at bat. They cut the Bowie lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by left fielder Garrett Guzman. Center fielder Roger Bernardina led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a homerun, pulling Harrisburg to within 3-2. With two outs and nobody on, William Bergolla got a base hit into center field and Mike Daniel tripled him home to tie the game at 3-3.
The pitchers commanded the middle of the game. Bowie starter David Hernandez pitched 5.0 innings, giving up three runs on six hits and striking out eight Senators. Harrisburg’s Jordan Zimmermann went 6.0 strong innings, giving up three runs on just four hits.
The Baysox managed to snap the deadlock in the top of the eighth. With the bases loaded and one out, Nolan Reimold picked up his second RBI of the day by drawing a walk and bringing in Carlos Rojas to put Bowie ahead, 4-3.
Bowie picked up some insurance in the top of the ninth when Kennard Jones led off with a single and Blake Davis sacrificed him over to second. Aggressive baserunning by Jones drew a wild throw from Harrisburg first baseman Luis Jimenez and Jones came in to score.
Baysox closer Julio Manon came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth with a 5-3 lead. Roger Bernardina led off the inning with his second homerun of the game, pulling Harrisburg to within 5-4. Manon settled down and retired the rest of the side in order to complete the three game sweep for the Baysox.
The Bowie bullpen was stellar again Sunday, with Felix Romero, Ryan Keefer, and Julio Manon combining for 4.0 innings of one run baseball, giving up just one hit and striking out five. The Baysox try to keep their winning streak going Tuesday in Reading. RHP Jason Berken (4-2, 4.86 ERA) will be up against LHP Fabio Castro (4-0, 4.30 ERA).
