September 1, 2007 - (Bowie, MD) - The Baysox entered Saturday night's game two against the Connecticut Defenders looking to get back on a winning streak, but instead found themselves losing 21-1 to the Defenders in a record defeat at Prince George's Stadium. The Baysox set new records for most runs allowed in an inning with 15, as well as most runs in a game with 21. The Baysox also set a new team record with a 20-run deficit in the loss.
Defenders catcher, Dayton Buller, who tripled twice and had five RBIs also singled in the seventh. Buller had not tripled since July 17, 2004 before ripping three-baggers in consecutive at-bats in the fifth. The 26-year-old entered Saturday's game batting just .164 in 21 games with the Defenders after hitting .287 in 42 games with Class A Augusta.
Defenders shortstop Jake Wald went 3-for-5 with an RBI single and a two-run homer, his seventh. Designated Hitter Randy Ruiz had three RBIs and second baseman Julio Cordido drove in a pair for Connecticut, which sent 19 men to the plate in the fifth inning.
Carlos Sosa and Simon Klink drove in a run apiece and John Bowker went 3-for-5 with an RBI to extend his hitting streak to 15 games.
Starter Nick Pereira earned his ninth win of the season. He allowed one run on five hits and four walks with three strikeouts in six innings to win his fifth straight decision for the Defenders.
Luis Montanez ripped a solo homer, his third, in third for the Baysox as their record falls to 72-66.
Baysox starter Oscar Alvarez took the loss, his seventh on the season. Alvarez gave up eight runs - seven earned - on six hits and five walks while fanning seven in 4 1/3 frames. David Haehnel was pounded for eight runs - four earned - on five hits and two walks with one strikeout, retiring just one batter.
Luis Jimenez made his first pitching appearance for the Baysox this season, tossing a perfect ninth inning and recording a strike out as Jake Wald went down swining. |
