August 16, 2007 - (Bowie, MD) – If the Baysox wrapped up their six-game homestand on a winning note, it would be big in a few ways. A win on Thursday would mark the second time this season the Baysox swept an entire homestand series. A win would also mark the Baysox 10th straight win, which would mark the Baysox longest win streak of 2007.
The Baysox started off with a bang in the second inning on their way to getting the W. Nolan Reimold led off the second inning with a solo home run to right center, his second in as many nights and eighth on the year, putting the Baysox ahead, 1-0. Two batters later Bryan Bass connected for a solo shot to left, putting the Baysox ahead, 2-0.
The Baysox would have their lead cut in half though in the top of the third, when Simon Klink led off the top of the frame for the Defenders with a solo home run putting the Defenders within one run at, 2-1.
The Baysox would run the lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the third, to take a four run lead. Oscar Salazar hit his team leading 20th homer of the season, a solo shot down the left field line with one out, to put the Baysox ahead, 3-1. Luis Jimenez would strike out for the second out of the inning and Nolan Reimold would reach on walk, putting one runner on with two outs. Jeff Fiorentino would then come to the plate and connected for a two-run homer over the wall in right center, good for a 5-1 Baysox lead.
The Defenders would keep it close though, plating three runs in the top of the fifth. Jake Wald would connect for a two out double, scoring Klink, cutting the Baysox lead to, 5-2. Pat Dobson would follow that up with a line drive single Steve Holm, cutting the deficit to, 5-3. Two batters later Dobson scored on an RBI single from John Bowker, evaporating the Baysox lead to, 5-4.
The Baysox would extend the lead to two runs in the bottom of the fifth, putting a run on the board, when Jeff Fiorentino scored Luis Jimenez on and RBI single for a 6-4 lead.
The Defenders kept battling back though and Bowker made the Baysox pay in the top of the seventh, hitting a solo homer to left, getting the Defenders to within, 6-5. Eugenio Velez would come around to score on a wild pitch in the inning by Felix Romero, who came in to relieve Alvarez in the sixth inning, to tie the game at, 6-6.
The Baysox would pull through in the ninth inning for the win on a walk-off RBI single by Luis Jimenez off of Defenders reliever Kelvin Pichardo, scoring Luis Hernandez, who went from first to third on a wild pitch to win the ballgame, 7-6.
Orlando Roman picked up his first Baysox win to move to (1-0) on the season. Roman went 2.0 innings, giving up only two hits, while recording a strikeout. Kelvin Pichardo took the loss in relief for the Defenders.
The win puts the Baysox a season high 11 games above .500 at (67-56) and with both Akron and second place Erie losing tonight, the Baysox are only 3.5 games behind first place Akron.
The Baysox next hit the road for a three game series at Harrisburg beginning on Friday. The Baysox next return home for a seven-game homestand on Monday vs. Trenton and then Erie.
