June 29, 2001 - Brandon Harper and Kevin Hooper stroked back-to-back doubles in the top of the eighth inning, sending the Portland Sea Dogs to a 4-3 victory over the Bowie Baysox Friday evening at Prince George’s Stadium.
Harper stepped in against Steve Bechler (0-1) with one out in the eighth and yanked a two-base hit into the left field corner. Hooper, who had only six extra-base hits on the season, followed with a grounder inside the third base bag bringing pinch runner Quincy Foster across with the tie-breaking run.
Bowie (34-42) had just tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Franky Figueroa stretched an at bat to 16 pitches before doubling to left center, chasing starter Mike Drumright. Reliever Bobby Rodgers (3-2) moved Figueroa to third with a wild pitch. Joey Hammond hit a screaming liner to third for the second out, but Figueroa was able to score when the first pitch to Tom McGee sailed off the glove of catcher Brandon Harper for a passed ball.
The Baysox grabbed a lead in the first as Tim Raines, Jr. singled stole second and went to third on a bunt single by Willie Harris. Harris promptly stole second as well. While Stoney Briggs was batting with one out, a wild pitch from Drumright scored Raines. Briggs walked, and Steve Goodell grounded a single into left field for a 2-0 lead.
Bechler retired the first 10 batters he faced before walking Derek Wathan on a 3-2 breaking pitch. Eric Gillespie followed with the Sea Dogs first hit, putting runners at first and second. Luke Wilcox then dropped a three-run homer barely over the left field fence giving Portland (40-35) a 3-2 edge.
The Baysox did not go down easily in the ninth. Figueroa reached on a two-out single to center, and Joey Hammond followed with a smash to left off the glove of the third baseman Heath Honeycutt. Pinch runner Shaun Babula and Hammond moved up on a wild pitch to Mike Lopez-Cao before the pinch hitter succumbed on strikes to end the game as Blaine Neal earned his 12th save.
NOTES: Alan Mills worked a perfect ninth for the Baysox...Carlos Casimiro had his hitting streak snapped at 12 games...Willie Harris stole two bases and now has 32 on the season, one shy of Rob Lukachyk's total in 1994...Only Curtis Goodwin with 59 in '94 has stolen more...John Stephens (6-3) will start for the Baysox in Altoona at 7:05 on Saturday...The Curve has handed Stephens two of his three losses...Eastern League newcomer Jose Lopez, who was 5-4 at Lynchburg, will start for Altoona.
